In January 1952 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and completed basic training at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas and then went on for Leadership Training. In the summer of 1952, he came home on furlough and became engaged to Ardeth. On September 21, 1952, Marvin was united in marriage to Ardeth Elaine Wirz. They moved back to El Paso for three months and in January of 1953 Marvin was sent overseas to Korea where he served until December of 1953. He was then hired in Halsey as a teacher and coach and they remained there for two years. They moved to Wichita where their son, Steven, went to the Institute of Logapedics and Marvin became a supervisor of physical education and attended Wichita State University to get his Masters Degree in school administration with an emphasis in special education.
