Obituary

Maxine Dora the daughter of E.D. (Jim) and Beth (Desch) Nickel was born on December 21, 1922 in Hamilton County Nebraska. She grew up in the Central City area attending Central City schools and graduating from Central City High School in 1940. She later went on to attend Business School and earn her CNA Degree. Maxine married Lynn Persons and this union was blessed with three daughters: Sally, Connie and Marilee "Wendi". She later married Eugene Howard Olson. Maxine worked in various office jobs including Loup Public Power and Mid-America Dairy. In the mid-fifties she worked as Dr. Maly's office nurse doing everything from taking x-rays to giving shots. She often laughed about the time she found the mice playing with the x-ray rubber gloves in the office basement. Later she worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant in area Nursing Homes. In her lifetime Maxine lived and worked in many states including Nebraska, Wyoming, Alaska, California, Arizona and Iowa. But to Max, the most important job of her life was that of Mother and Grandmother. She filled each day with her special love and humor. Her advice was wise and memorable. And she loved turning words into something fun. You may say hors d'oeuvre but she'd say Horsey Doovers. No matter what life sent her way she could always find a positive way to look at the situation. After Sally's death in Arizona, Maxine moved north to live with Connie and Bill. And after her son-in-law's death she moved to Northwood, Iowa to be with Wendi. When her health began to fail she decided to move into the Northwood Pines, an Assisted Living Facility in Northwood. When it was clear that Wendi would be taking a new appointment she moved back to Albion to be with daughter Connie. While there she enjoyed living in her own apartment at the Samaritan Estates Assisted Living in Albion. In addition to her love for people, Maxine had a deep love of animals. When she couldn't have her own dogs, she loved sharing other's pets and had a deep attachment to Connie's little Pixie. Max also adopted the birds and squirrels and loved watching and feeding them from her windows. Maxine was a life- long member of the United Methodist Church where for years she shared her gifts teaching Sunday School and singing in the Choir. Maxine entered into her heavenly life on Thursday, March 26th at the Boone County Health Center in Albion with her loving family by her side. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Howard; daughter Sally Persons- Beck, and son-in-law Jim Gillan. Grateful for having shared her life are her daughters: Connie Cornwell and husband Bill of Albion, NE and Pastor Wendi Gillan of Cedar Falls, Iowa; six grandchildren; Bobb Cornwell, Jeff Cornwell, Jylean (Tom) Hopkins, Ryan (Jean) Cornwell, David (Sheila) Beck, Erinn Machacek; 16 great grandchildren and another eagerly awaited; her brother: Dr. Jim Nickel and wife Nathalie of Helena, MT; sister-in-law Shari Copenhaver and husband Terry of Helena, MT; several cousins and many other family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all!
