Melvin Guy Johnson, 60, was born June 24, 1949, to Ted and the late Geneva Johnson of Queen City, Mo. He died March 5, 2010, in Seward, Nebraska.
Melvin was member, treasurer and deacon of Calvary Baptist Church in Seward, and formerly member, trustee and deacon at Southside Baptist Church in Carrollton, MO. He was devoted spouse of Jeannette Yagel Johnson, Seward, for 37 years; and proud father of Jodi Porter (husband Steven), Durham, N.C., and Jared Johnson, Eden Prairie, Minn. Mel graduated from Queen City School (1966) and the University of Missouri (BS, Agriculture and MS, Agronomy).
Blessed with a love of nature and gifts for understanding and helping shape it, Mel served for nearly 35 years as an agronomist and hybrid corn breeder for several seed companies, working most recently at Syngenta Seeds Inc. in Seward; at home, he enjoyed creating expert gardens full of daylilies, fruits and vegetables. His family and friends will greatly miss the radiance of his smile and of his handiwork.
Mel was preceded in death also by his brother Nevin Johnson, father-in-law Stewart Yagel, and brother-in-law Gene Yagel.
Additional survivors include stepmother Fern Johnson, Queen City; brothers Evan (wife Janet), Glenwood, Mo., Alvin (wife Becky), Kirksville, Mo., and Kevin (wife Tammy), Queen City; mother-in-law Claribel Yagel, Brookfield, Mo.; brothers-in-law Ed Yagel (wife Linda), Hinton, Iowa, and Scott Yagel (wife Joyce), Carrollton, Texas; sisters-in-law Wanda Yagel, Brookfield, and Lynnette Yearns, Warrensburg, Mo.; cousins, nieces, nephews; and (finally some day) grandchildren.
