Melvin Eugene Lindner was born on March 20, 1951, in Lincoln, Nebraska to Leonard Fredrick and Florence Johanna (Westerhoff) Lindner and passed away on April 10, 2022, at his home near Malcolm, Nebraska at the age of 71 years and 21 days.
Mel grew up on the family farm near Malcolm where he attended and graduated from Malcolm High School with the Class of 1969. He enlisted into the Army National Guard on October 16, 1969, served as a staff sergeant in Company D (Maintenance) 67 th Support Battalion, and was honorably discharged on October 15, 1981. Mel worked for the City of Lincoln in the street department for several years after high school. On August 12, 1972, he was united in marriage to Cheryl Bohaty at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Brainard, Nebraska, and to this union two children were born. He later worked at the Seward Farmer's Cooperative and also part-time as an ASCS land surveyor. In the early 1980's, Mel began farming full-time on the family farm until his passing.
Mel served on the Emerald Farmer's Cooperative Board for several years. He was a 43-year member of the Malcolm Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, where he served as a Fireman, EMT and also served for more than 30 years as the Treasurer. Mel was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Malcolm. The couple enjoyed traveling, boating with their children and grandchildren, water and snow skiing. In their younger days, they also enjoyed spending their weekends dancing in Malcolm. Mel loved playing cards with family and friends and was an avid hunter. Mel had a deep interest in classic cars and tried to stop at every car museum he could. His greatest joy was watching his children and grandchildren grow and attending their activities and sporting events.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Florence Lindner, and his father and mother-in-law, Edward and Helena Bohaty.
Those cherishing his memory include his wife, Cheryl Lindner; daughter, Michelle and husband, Frank Loos; son, Chris and wife, Lindsey Lindner, all of Malcolm; five grandchildren, Cydnee Loos, Sawyer Loos, Caleb Courter, Keenan Lindner and Gabrielle Lindner, all of Malcolm; sister, Jan and husband, Byron Melichar, Crete; brother-in-law, Keith and wife, Brenda Bohaty, Overland Park, Kansas; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers and memories of a life shared with Mel.
