Merle Eugene Schluckebier was born December 20, 1919 near Tamora, Nebraska to Henry and Ina (Mercer) Schluckebier and passed away in Seward, Nebraska on December 7, 2010 at the age of 90 years, 11 months, 18 days. Merle was a 1937 graduate of Tamora High School and a 1941 graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture and he was also a four year ROTC member while at the University. Merle served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. Merle was united in marriage to Ila J. Preston on February 12, 1942 in Trenton, New Jersey at the Methodist Church. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Lynn, Jay and Karen. Merle was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of the Seward United Methodist Church and a member of Seward VFW Post No. 4755.
Merle is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ina Schluckebier and his sister, Margaret Schluckebier.
Survivors left to cherish Merle's memory include his wife, Ila Schluckebier of Seward; his son and daughter-in-law, Lynn and Mary Schluckebier of Seward; son, Jay Schluckebier of Lincoln, daughter-in-law, Jeralyn Schluckebier of Lincoln, daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Melvin Sich of Thief River Falls, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Kevin and Carolyn Schluckebier, Benjamin and Jamie Schluckebier, Michael and Lindsey Schluckebier, Maggie and Charles Gleason, Jesse Sich, Jeremy Sich; great-grandchildren, Elena Schluckebier, Anna Schluckebier, Eric Schluckebier, Hazel Schluckebier, and Christopher Gleason; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and a host of friends. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers and memories of life shared with Merle.
