Mervin William Zillig was born on the family farm between Seward and Garland, Nebraska on February 18, 1921. He was the second youngest of seven children born to William and Nellie (Francis) Zillig. He attended rural grade school and graduated from Seward High School. On March 1, 1942, he married Myrna M. Sieck of Pleasant Dale, Nebraska. Myrna and Mervin have five children, twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Between 1942 and 1986, Mervin and Myrna farmed, initially on rented land near the family farm, and following brother Leo Zillig going into the seminary, Mervin farmed the land on the family farm. In 1972, Mervin and Myrna built a new home on the family farm, where they lived until Mervin's death on April 1, 2008. In addition to farming, Mervin was a long time DeKalb seed corn dealer, and also sold real estate. Mervin and Myrna retired from farming in 1986 and have rented out the land since that date. Mervin was an active member of Friedens United Church of Christ in Seward and in 2003 served as chairman of the 125th celebration of the church. He was also active in the Seward Grange and the Seward 4th of July Celebration. Mervin loved to bowl, play softball and was a master fisherman. In Mervin and Myrna's retirement years, they traveled frequently and loved to fish at Johnson Lake. Mervin also enjoyed playing cribbage with his friends at the Seward Senior Center. Mervin was preceded in death by his parents, William and Nellie (Francis) Zillig, his brother Leo Zillig, and an infant brother, Clifford; his sisters, Leona and husband, Carl Westerhoff, and Dorothy and husband Ray Flowerday; brothers-in-law, Charles Lyon and Ted Flowerday; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harold and Elsie Sieck; niece, Janice Preston and nephew, Roger Sieck.
