Rex Lee Smetter was born June 11, 1928 in Goehner, Nebraska the son of Edd M. and Katie (Zimmer) Smetter. Rex passed away in Lincoln, Nebraska on January 12, 2016 at the age of 87 years, 7 months, 1 day. Rex was raised with his seven siblings in Seward County and he attended school in Goehner. Rex served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 through 1952 in Tennessee, Texas and on an ammunition carrier during the Korean Conflict. Rex was united in marriage to Iva McKay on October 19, 1952 in Palmyra, Nebraska and their marriage was blessed with four children, Sheryl, Scott, Sue and Sam. They lived in and around Lincoln for six years and in November of 1958 the family moved to Seward County. Rex was employed with the Journal Star Printing Company for 38 years and was a school bus driver for the School District of Seward for 16 years. Rex was a member of Great Plains Community Church in Goehner; Seward VFW Post #4755, Beaver Crossing American Legion Post #178 and the Goehner Volunteer Fire Department.
Rex was preceded in death by his parents, Edd and Katie Smetter; his wife, Iva Smetter in 1998; two brothers, Edward and Frank and five sisters, Ethel Smetter, Lena Hunt, Wilma Martin, Mabel Minzel and Hazel Miller; and his parents-in-law, Eldee and Mabel McKay.
Rex is survived by his children and their spouses, Sheryl Smetter, Seward, Scott and Pat Smetter, Lincoln, Sue Smetter, Goehner, Sam and Shelly Smetter, Seward; grandchildren, Brandon Smetter, Levi Smetter, Chelse Smetter, Zack Smetter, Zoie (Logan) Thune, Grace Smetter; brother-in-law, Ellis and Priscilla McKay, Lakewood, CO; a special kitty, Pumpkin; other relatives and a host of friends.
