Obituary

Richard A. "Doc" Hans was born on August 2, 1947, in Seward to Chester and Gertrude (Ihde) Hans and passed away on November 24, 2018, in Seward at the age of 71 years, 3 months and 22 days. Richard was baptized on August 31, 1947 and later confirmed on March 26, 1961 both at St. John Lutheran Church. Richard grew up in Seward where he attended St. John Lutheran School through the eighth grade and Seward High School graduating with the Class of 1965.

Staff Sergeant Richard Hans joined the United States Army in May of 1966 and was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. After his initial service in the army he transferred to the Nebraska National Guard in Seward, Nebraska. He served in the following units in Seward: Co. C (-), 2nd Battalion (Mech), 134th Infantry Regiment from 1966-1968, 1st and 2nd Platoons of the 867th Engineer Company from 1968-1985, and Company B, 135th Signal Battalion from 1985 until his honorable discharge and retirement in 1991. He was awarded the NCO Professional Development Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, Nebraska National Guard Commendation Medal, Nebraska Individual Achievement Award, and was rated Sharpshooter (Rifle). He served as docent at the Nebraska National Guard Museum for National Able at the time of his passing.

Dick was employed at Rolfsmeier Motors from 1968 to 2006 working several positions, beginning with the lube rack and ending as a Service Manager. He then continued his career at Meyer Automotive from 2006 to 2016 working in the warranty department. Dick was also active the last year and half at the Crossmakers of Seward.

Richard was very active with the City of Seward where he served in many ways including: City Council 2010-2018, Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Application Review Board for Economic Development 2015-2018, Application Review Board for Economic Development (LB840) 2010-2016, Airport Authority 1994-2000 and 2009-2010, Zoning Board of Adjustment 1987-2002, Utilities & Public Properties Committee 2010-2012, Planning Commission 2001-2010, and Personnel, Finance & Audit Committee 2014-2018.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Marjorie Junge and Della Miers.

Survivors include his three sisters, Judy Landenberger and husband Ray, Diller, NE, Linda Ehrlich and husband Roy, Seward, Nancy Johnson, Lincoln; two brothers-in-law, Dick Miers, Seward and Delbert Junge, Seward; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces, great-great nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
