Richard Dean Sanley was born September 25, 1925 in Surprise, Nebraska, the son of Lewis and Mattie (Heins) Sanley. Dick passed away on Saturday, September 4, 2010 in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 84 years, 11 months, 9 days. He attended Surprise School and was a 1943 graduate of Ulysses High School. Dick served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the European and Pacific combat theaters. On June 4, 1946, he was united in marriage to Marcella "Sally" Othila Masek. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Daniel, John, Randy and Tina. Dick farmed near Surprise, worked at the Ulysses Lumber Yard, owned Dick's Grocery Store, also in Ulysses and worked for Hughes Brothers Manufacturing in Seward for 15 years. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Ulysses and was a member of Dwight American Legion Post No. 110. For many years, Dick volunteered placing and removing flags on veterans' graves for Memorial Day. He helped construct the military memorial at Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery and helped build Aquinas High School in David City. Dick enjoyed gardening, golf ball art, horse racing and Big Red football.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Mattie Sanley; his siblings, Thomas J. Sanley, John T. Sanley Lewis H. Sanley, Jr., David B. Sanley, Grant Sanley, Glenn Sanley, Lucille F. Osantowski, Genevieve Novacek, and Marjorie I. Wustrack.
Dick is survived by his wife, Marcella "Sally" Sanley of Milford; his sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel Sanley of LaMesa, CA, John and Theresa Sanley of Omaha, Randy "Chuck" and Pat Sanley of Seward; daughter, Tina Duffek of Sioux Falls, SD; eight grandchildren, Dr. Michael Sanley, Christine Sanley, Liz Sanley, Dr. Benjamin and Leanne Sanley, Dr. Brian and Jill Sanley, Tony and Kelly Duffek, Stazy Duffek, Drew Duffek; seven great-grandchildren, Morgan Sanley, Alexander Sanley, Cameron Sanley, William Sanley, Maddison Sanley, McKena Duffek and Owen Duffek; nieces and nephews and a host of friends. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers, and memories of life shared with Dick.
