Richard Emge Tierney, 84, formerly of Seward, Nebraska died on May 15, 2010 at the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home in Bellevue, Nebraska. Mr. Tierney was born on November 6, 1925 in Missouri Valley, Iowa, the seventh child of Patrick and Marie (Emge) Tierney. He attended public school in Missouri Valley and enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17 . He served in the Navy during WW II as an Aviation Mechanics Mate Third Class, seeing battle in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he lived in Rochester, Minnesota where he met and married Virginia Rosalia Fernandez and they began their family there with the birth of two daughters. Mr. and Mrs. Tierney moved to Seward, Nebraska in 1951 and five more daughters were born to complete their family. Dick worked as a telephone lineman in the 1950s and then became owner/proprietor of Dicks Bar. He worked as a car salesman in Seward and Lincoln until his retirement. During his life in Seward, Mr. Tierney served as a volunteer with the ambulance, with the Blue Valley Baseball League and was a member of St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church. He was a very proud lifelong Democrat and a life member of the Seward Veterans of Foreign War Post #4755. Mr. Tierney was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, daughter, Sonia Tierney and great-grandsons, Jalen and Joshua Bruce Steans. Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Rita Tierney of Brandon, MS, Johanna and Bruce Steans of Sacramento, CA, Teresa and Tom McHenry of Parker, CO, Mary Tierney of Erie, CO, Jacqueline and John Murray of Norfolk, VA and Ann and Brent Payne of Omaha, NE; his sister, Irene Palzer of Washington; brothers, Patrick Tierney and Robert Tierney of Oceanside, CA; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and over 40 nieces and nephews. |
