Rodney Lee Winroth was born on August 15, 1948, in Hammond, Indiana to Sidney and Joyce (Hawkins) Winroth and passed away on February 28, 2022, in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 73 years, 6 months, and 13 days.
Rod grew up on the family farm and graduated from Halstad High School with the Class of 1966. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Army on January 20, 1969, where he served in Vietnam. He received several medals including a Purple Heart, National Defense Service, Vietnam Service, Vietnam Campaign, Army Commendation, and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on January 19, 1971. He later moved to Red Oak, Iowa, where he married Kerry Orvik and to this union two children were born, Britt (Winroth) Otte and Ryan Winroth. He retired from BNSF Railway, where he worked as a Roadmaster, Foreman, and Track Inspector.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Joyce Winroth and sister, Tammy Winroth Peterson.
Rod is survived by his children, Britt (Kelly) Otte, Lincoln, and Ryan (Janessa) Winroth, Johnston, IA; five grandchildren, Katie Otte, Parker Otte, Brody Otte, Jacob Winroth, and Jackson Winroth; sister, Cindy Winroth; brother, Randy Winroth; brother-in-law, Roger Peterson; loving friend for many years, Linda Winroth, and numerous nieces and nephews. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers, and memories of a life shared with Rod.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at the Omaha National Cemetery with Chaplain Dave Kersting officiating. Military honors will be performed by the U.S. Army and Omaha American Legion Post #1. Memorial contributions may be made to the Winroth family for future designations.
