Roger Bowker, 80, of Seward, NE, a Christian Believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, passed away on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
Roger was born March 3, 1931 in Alexandria, Nebraska to Frank and Myrtle (Larsen) Bowker. Roger graduated from Alexandria High School, attended the Junior College at Fairbury, and taught rural school one year before moving to Lincoln where he began working in the yard at Midwest Lumber Co. His innate business acumen and personality led to his quick promotion. He traveled throughout the United States and Canada as a buyer for the company, and was the General Sales Manager before leaving that business in the early 70's to purchase Production Sales Co., a Lincoln-based Ag grain business.
In 1969, Roger married Ruby (Vrana) Abker. They lived in Lincoln for many years before moving to Seward, where they had relocated Production Sales, which grew to include international sales. Roger sold the company and retired in 2007 following Ruby's death.
Roger and Ruby enjoyed traveling until her health made that impossible. In recent years, Roger had the opportunity to travel again and enjoyed trips to Israel and Alaska. He made friends wherever he went. Roger was an avid reader and great scholar, especially of his faith. He attended many conferences and enjoyed sharing information with his family and friends. Always a fan of music, especially Big Band music, he had his own band: Roger Bowker - the friendly man with the friendly band - when he was young and attended musical performances and dances in the area until his death. A special joy of his later years was sharing his love of music with his great-grandchildren at the Glen Miller Festival in Clarinda, Iowa. Roger was a great story teller and often spoke lovingly about his small home town and the surrounding area. He especially loved hiking through the woods of his property on the Sandy River, pointing out the Artesian springs and reminiscing with family and friends.
Roger is survived by his children; Vince Bowker of LaVista, NE; Robert (Reva) Bowker of St. Peters, MO; Kurt (Helen) Abker of Lincoln, NE; Steve (Shelly) Abker of Pittsburgh, PA; Sue (Dan) Christensen of Holdrege, NE; and Norma (Mark) Sheldon of Niles, MI; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; his brothers Larsen (Jeanette) Bowker, Brad (Colleen) Bowker, and sisters Betty (Bill) Walsh, and Marilyn Gill.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruby, brother, Gene Bowker and brother-in-law, Max Gill.
