Rufus George Harvey was born August 23, 1913 in Greenwood, Nebraska to William Boyd and Elvira (Ashcraft) Harvey and passed away in Utica, Nebraska on December 20, 2009 at the age of 96 years, 3 months, 28 days. Rasty was raised by his Aunt Elva Richman following his mother's death when Rasty was less than one year old. He was a 1933 graduate of Utica High School. On January 17, 1937, Rasty was united in marriage to Elaine Laura Hohnbaum in Utica and their marriage was blessed with two children, Tex and Pam. Rasty served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS St. George, an aircraft carrier. He was the owner of the Corner Market Grocery and Farm Produce Store in Utica and later was employed by Busch Lumber Company and then the Utica Co-op Elevator. Rasty was a member of the Utica United Methodist Church for over 70 years. Other memberships included the Utica Fire Department for 46 years and a 69-year member of Waco VFW Post No. 7836 and Utica American Legion Post No. 49. Rastys hobbies included raising livestock, particularly horses; he also enjoyed swimming, bowling, gardening and yard work. Rasty never met a person he didn't consider a friend.
Rasty is preceded in death by his parents, William B. and Elvira Harvey; his wife, Elaine L. Harvey in 1999; brother, Clyde Harvey; sisters, Mildred Busch, Sadie Ambrose and Fannie Harvey; grandson, Linc Anthony Harvey.
Rasty is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Tex R. and Bev Harvey of Grand Island; daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Steve Eikenhorst of Osceola; four grandchildren, Jeff and Katie Harvey, Troy and Michele Harvey, Shana and Carlos Castillo and Jess Eikenhorst; six great-grandchildren, Lacey Jo Harvey, Nicole Kay Harvey, Jax David Harvey, Colt Jeffrey Harvey, Olivia Elise Castillo, Emme Grace Castillo; other relatives and a host of friends. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers, and memories of life shared with Rasty.
