Ruth Ellen Gee, 86, died peacefully, Thursday, February 2, 2006, at Heartland Park Assisted Living, Seward, NE, her home for the last 7 years, after a long illness. Born December 27, 1919, in Lincoln, Illinois, she was the only child of the late Burch Fitzhugh and Margaret Irene Morris Lee, of Logan County, Illinois. She graduated from Hartsburg, IL High School in 1937 and from Lincoln College, Lincoln, IL in 1939. She taught for several years in a one-room country school near Hartsburg, IL She met Solon Gee of Parma, MO at a Homecoming Dance in July of 1940. World War II kept them apart for 4 years, but they were married in Hartsburg, June 20, 1946, the 30th anniversary of her parents marriage. Solon and Ruth Ellen moved to Southeast Missouri that summer and while Solon began farming, Ruth continued teaching in a one-room school in Catron, MO then later taught first grade in Marston, MO. They had 4 children. After Solons premature death from cancer on December 11, 1963, she began working as a bookkeeper at E.B.Gee Cotton & Grain in Marston, MO. She loved working, especially with the farmers and men who had worked with Solon, until her retirement in 1981. After caring for her mother, who lived with her for 15 years, Ruth Ellen moved to Seward in 1998. Ruth Ellen was a 50- year member of the New Madrid Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Seward United Methodist Church where she had transferred her membership and where she found a loving church home. Ruths greatest joy was her 4 children and whether keeping stats for every basketball game Tom played, supporting Carols plays, cheering at Paulas volleyball games, or being wherever Patty lead the marching band, she was always their greatest cheerleader and support. She was a sports enthusiast and loved entertaining and nothing was more fun than a party at the Gees. Ruth Ellen leaves behind her 4 devoted children and their families: Tom and Jeanne, Matthew, Alex and Logan of Seward, NE; Carol of Perrysburg, OH; Paula of Langhorne, PA; Patty and Nick Nicholson of Kansas City, MO; Scott Nicholson, Los Angeles, CA; Matt and Janet, Cailin, Bronwyn and Megan Nicholson, Manassas, VA; Paul and Kristin Janssen Nicholson, Arlington, VA. She is also survived by her two only cousins, Donabelle King and Dorothy Edwards of Beatrice, NE and their respective families; a brother-in-law and wife, Bob and Irene Gee of Portageville, Mo, a sister-in law, Kathleen Crouch of Richmond, Indiana; and a sister-in-law, Gracemary Gee of Jefferson City, Mo as well as several special nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind life-long friends as well as wonderful friends and staff at Heartland. Her final months were made special by the care of Sharon Stutzman and Asera Care Hospice caregivers. Ruth Ellen had many wonderful qualities, but is remembered best for her ability to see the good in everything and everybody. She had a deep faith in God with whom she could not have gotten through life. And despite a diseased heart, it was capable of more love than imaginable, which she expressed often through her ministry of flowers. And she was amazing at making lemonade whenever life handed her lemons. She left a legacy of love to her children, grandchildren and all who knew her. Donations in honor of her life should be made to the Seward United Methodist Church, 1400 N. 5th St. Seward, NE 68434; Asera Care Hospice, 1100 Lincoln Avenue, Ste. B1, York, NE 68467; Seward High School Drumline, 532 Northern Heights Dr., Seward, NE 68434 and the New Madrid Methodist Church, 623 Mill Street, New Madrid, MO 63869. |
