Susan Louise Smith of Lincoln, Nebraska passed away July 15th, 2011. She was born April 22nd 1940 in Council Bluffs, IA to Louis E. and Mary (Maughan) Sahn. Susan married Stephen F. Smith of Seward in 1967 and this union was blessed with two children, Mary Elizabeth and Stephen Foster II. Susan graduated Seward High School in 1958, and the University of Nebraska in 1962 with a B.S. in Education. Susan was awarded a Masters of Education from Concordia University in 1993. She was a lifelong teacher and taught in numerous school districts including Lincoln Public Schools, Seward Public Schools, District 66 in Omaha and Idaho Falls Public Schools. Most recently, she taught both GED and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at Southeast Community College in Lincoln. In 2004, Susan opened the Performance Based Learning Center (PBLC), which helps students learn through individualized instruction and was recognized for inclusion in Who's Who of American Women. In addition to her professional accomplishments, Susan was a tireless advocate, guardian and mother for her son "Deucer", who experienced a traumatic brain injury at age 19. Susan served her community through her work on the Seward 4th of July Committee, Seward Jr. Women's Club and was a longtime member of Seward United Methodist Church. In her most recent years, she served her neighbors through her work as the Administrative Assistant for Wellington Greens Homes Association in Lincoln. Preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Mary Sahn of Seward. Susan is survived by her children: Mary Elizabeth and Jeffrey Coons of Atlanta, GA and Stephen "Deucer" Smith; of Omaha, NE, Sister Gwen Madison, Nieces Sue Waner, Amy Cronin and three great nephews all of Omaha. Susan is also survived by her former husband Steve Smith, his wife Linda of Seward, many members of the Smith family as well as close friends. |
