Memorial Service 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 26, 2011 Zabka Funeral Home Reverend Al Smith, officiating Honorary Casket Bearers The Git 'N Split Coffee Gang VISITATION 1:00 pm to 7:30 pm Sunday, September 25, 2011 with family present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Zabka Funeral Home MEMORIALS Memorials in lieu of flowers to Seward Community Scholarship Fund INTERMENT Seward Cemetery with Military Honors Seward, Nebraska Vernon "Pete" Harold Yost was born July 29, 1943 in Loup City, Nebraska to Russell Otis and Dora Daisy (Miller) Yost and passed away at his home in Seward, Nebraska on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at the age of 68 years, 1 month, 23 days. Pete started school in Loup City then moved to Orleans in 1953 where he graduated from Orleans High School in 1962. While in school he played football, baseball and was a Boy Scout. He worked on a farm during the summers. In the summer of 1962, Pete joined the U.S. Navy; when he returned from the service he started working for the CB & Q Rail Road (later to become BNSF Rail Road). He was a signal engineer and maintained a territory including Seward until the last six years when he was in the BN office in Lincoln. Pete enjoyed the railroad and had many friends there during the 40 years of his employment until his retirement in May of 2003. Pete married Cheryl Anne Fluhart in 1965 in Hastings, NE where they lived until moving to Seward in September of 1967. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Michael and Melinda. Pete was a member of the United Methodist Church, Oliver Lodge #38, Blue River OES #132, Scottish Rite, Thornridge Country Club, American Legion Post #33 and a life member of the Brotherhood of RR Signalmen Union #119. Pete enjoyed the outdoors and liked to hunt and fish. He was a Boy Scout Master for several years. After retiring he enjoyed golf, playing poker, his yard and garden. Pete loved to travel and always enjoyed family vacations; a highlight was the World's Fair in Knoxville, TN in 1982. After he retired, he also traveled with his older brother on business trips. Pete is preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Dora Yost. Pete is survived by his wife, Cheryl; their children and spouses, Michael and Debbie Yost of Lincoln and Melinda and Chris Abbott of Lincoln; grandson, Alex Vernon Abbott; brothers and sisters-in-law, Everett and Mary Yost, Sauk City, WI, Dennis Yost, Colorado Springs, CO, and Larry and Gerry Yost, Ravenna, NE; nieces and nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Don and Sylvia Fluhart, Hastings, John "J.D." and Sheryl Fluhart, Gilberts, IL, Carol Boutin, Ord; neighbors and many friends. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers and memories of life shared with Pete.
