Viola Bertha Marie Bjerrum was born October 30, 1912 in Seward, Nebraska to Gottfried and Mary Helen (Wall) Bluhm. She was retired from teaching and farming. Viola was the widow of Millard Bjerrum. Survivors: son, daughter-in-law, Randy and Leah Bjerrum, Utica; daughters, sons-in-law, Connie and Don Whittemore, Seward, Linda and Larry Volland, Lincoln; grandchildren, Lori Bjerrum, David and Jeanette Bjerrum, Kim (Whittemore) and Kenneth Joseph Brownell, Greg and Amy Whittemore; Jennifer Volland, Debra Volland; great grandchildren, Colby Bjerrum, Sairon, Angela, and Katelyn Bruno, Bradyn and Clay Brownell, Harper and Kendell Whittemore, Kalista Volland. Preceded in death by: husband, Millard; parents; brothers, Reinard Bluhm, Theodore (Pat) Bluhm, Carl Bluhm, and infant Edwin Bluhm; sisters, Alma Sell, Clara Harris, and Edna Bottcher. Viola was the youngest of eight children. She graduated from Seward High School with Normal Training and attended the University of Nebraska to be a teacher. She taught elementary school (K-8) for ten years, first at Staplehurst and then her home school south of Seward. Viola married Millard in 1939 and they farmed near Utica until Millards death in 1984. In 1985 she retired to Seward. Viola and Millard were active in the Utica Grange, Utica United Methodist Church, and the Utica Order of Eastern Star where they served as Worthy Matron and Patron and Viola was a fifty-year member. Viola met Millard at a dance at the Pla Mor Ballroom and they continued their love of dancing with square dancing, round dancing and ballroom dancing where they made many friends. They enjoyed traveling with their camper and vacationing with their families, and also belonged to several card groups. Having lost her father as a little girl and her mother while in high school, family was very important to Viola. She was able to remain in her Seward home until the last few months of her life through the loving efforts of her family and a caregiver, Marilyn Vogt. The remaining eleven months were at the Utica Community Care Center where she received excellent care from the staff and from Hospice. Viola was a tireless worker, even repainting the farm at the age of eighty. She was proud of her teaching and proud of her family. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. To this obituary we add our thoughts, prayers and memories of life shared with Viola. |
