Wayne Oscar Tanderup was born on May 23, 1929 in Maskell, Nebraska. He was the seventh of 12 children and was raised on a farm. Wayne was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Maskell. He contracted Polio at the age of 16 and got around with the aid of leg braces and later with a wheelchair. On November 28, 1958 he was united in marriage to Joan Faye Grimm. In 1969 Wayne and Joan purchased Seward Motor Freight, Inc. which grew from three trucks to at present 130 tractors and 400 trailers and employs approximately 150. In addition to Seward Motor Freight, Wayne has also owned many other businesses including Plum Creek Restaurant, Blue River Implement, Great Plains Tire Center and Waynes Truck Service. Wayne enjoyed spending time with his family; especially his grandchildren and he enjoyed fishing, camping, reading, wildlife and Husker football. He loved the companionship of his dog, Sam. Besides being a successful businessman, he was also very active in the community and the trucking industry. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Seward, serving as past president and past treasurer. A member of Seward Rotary Club No. 1540, serving as president in 1989-90; Rotary International past chairman of District 565 Polio Plus Campaign; past president of the Seward Industrial Development Corporation; and past director of the Seward Chamber of Commerce. In addition, Wayne was on the Nebraska Motor Carriers Association Board of Directors and was chairman from 1989-90 and he was the American Trucking Association (ATA) State Vice President. Wayne has been honored numerous times. Some of his favorite honors include Distinguished Service Award from Concordia University in Seward; Lincoln Transportation Club Man of the Year; Rotary Outstanding Chairman, District 565, of the Year for 1987-1988; Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, 1989; District 565 Rotary Cadwallader Award Winner, 1989; Rotarys Nebraskan of the Year; 1994 Aksarben Good Neighbor Citation and 2002 Rotary District Service Award. Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, George Peter Nielsen and Olga Margaret (Lukken) Tanderup; his brothers, George Calvin Tanderup, Lyle Tanderup, Robert Tanderup and Merrill Tanderup; his sisters, Aylene Cockell, VerJean Rahn, Nitha Gamble and Janice Tanderup. Wayne is survived by his wife, Joan Tanderup, Pleasant Dale; his daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Erich Helge, Seward, Linda and Bill Kuhlman, Pleasant Dale, Carol and Tom Fowler, Colorado Springs, Colorado; his grandchildren, Erica Helge, Brian Helge, Russell Kuhlman, Robert Kuhlman, Heather Kuhlman, Zayne Fowler and Joelle Fowler; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Elvira and John Grindvold, Hartington, Mona and Frank Ricci, Junction City, KS; two sisters-in-law, Cynthia Tanderup, Lincoln, Madonna Tanderup, Dixon; and a brother-in-law, Lyle Gamble, Seward; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and a host of friends.
