Winona Florence Gerwick, 82, Seward, died Tuesday (1-22-08). Born, Alexandria (12-28-25) to Louis Hermann and Clara Anna (Siebenneicher) Ude. She graduated from Fairbury High School in 1943. She started teaching school in a one-room schoolhouse, then later secured a clerical position at Fairbury Junior College. She married DeVere Joseph Gerwick on 6-8-47 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Gladstone, Nebraska. She worked as a secretary at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and eventually held employment as a secretary at Concordia University in Seward for over 20 years. She retired to take care of her son, Rex DeVere, until his death on 2-6-93, then later took care of her invalid husband for 7 years until his death on 12-8-04. She lived in Seward since 1949. She enjoyed watching sports, old movies and late-night television; reading, and just simply living. Her mental attitude was one that we all strive to achieve but of which we usually fall short. When she smiled and laughed you could not help but be uplifted. She was definitely one of the brighter stars in this world. Survivors: daughter, son-in-law, Sue Christine and Gary Glen Weaver, Irvine, California; grandson, Daniel DeVere Weaver, Honolulu, Hawaii; granddaughter, Sara Rebekah Weaver, Irvine, California; sister-in-law, Joyce LaVera (Pitts) Ude, Fairbury; nieces, Crystal LaVera (Ude) Stall, Fairbury, Rita Lynn Ude, Omaha; Holly LeAnn (Ude) Tracy, Lincoln; and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Roger Louis Ude on 3-6-07; her husband; and her son. |
